  • It is impossible to see MoMA one time. At the 3rd room, Mai says she gets tired and needs to eat something right now. It’s better to join membership that can be admission free. You also can join many events they hold up. With IDNYC, membership will be also free for one year. Or, your friends has a membership card, you can enter with just $5 as a guest. Or, first Friday of month is UNIQLO Night, everyone can enter free. you should reserve its ticket earlier. It’s okay if you’er wearing no UNIQLO clothes.

When I got off the elevator at 5th, there are paintings by Giorgio de Chirico. It was unexpected to me. This floor titled “Collection 1880s–1940s” that would mean you can see MoMa’s most of oldest collections here. When I was student in Japan, I thought American did not prioritize Surrealism. Surrealism is European, it was my poor assumption by now.

“501 Motion and Illumination” “507 In Solidarity” Like such the names given each of rooms. Generally, it follows a timeline. They also curated European art carefully. They have a room of the artist movement what was born and dead at Europa as like Kupka’s. They also have great photograph works, its combination super cool. Meanwhile, It seemed few presence of Bauhaus or Russian Avant-garde or Impressionism. Anyway, they looked to focus on Surrealism.

At late in the gallery, the room “517 Surrealist Objects” they have. They also many surrealist’s work in the other room, but this room was a kind of peak of 5th. At this room, I saw a lot of creepy works… creepy Oppenheim, creepy Kahlo, creepy Miro, creepy Magritte… I found a girl who was sticking to a work and drawing it. Oh… she loves creepy things or so I thought at first. Yet it was the most non-creepy piece in this room, “Taglioni’s Jewel Casket” by Joseph Cornell. It was cute. He is known as natural born American surrealist.

Giacomo Balla, Brassaï, Hilma af Klint, Jean Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Stettheimer, Valie Export… So many things I had I can’t write all about it. Even though I saw only on the 5th floor…
